Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her heritage – was buried under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had resulted from the mission, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The self-operating spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The group of women also featured leaders in different industries.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
