A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian works. They were built at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested pending a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
